S.C. Man: I Was Kicked Out of College for Watching Glee
A 23-year-old South Carolina man claims he was barred from graduating from Greenville's Bob Jones University because he was caught watching Glee off-campus.
Chris Peterman says officials at the conservative Baptist college began targeting him after he organized a group dedicated to ending sexual abuse. He was cited and given demerits for frivolous reasons like returning late to his dorm and not shaving, he claims.
Peterman believes the final straw was when a fellow student saw him watching Glee on his computer while at a Starbucks. While TV viewing is banned on campus, students are allowed to watch programs outside of BJU. After the Glee incident, he received enough demerits, specifically for "Insubordination/Disrespect," to be tossed off campus and denied graduation.

(269 posts)Linthead is right! I live about 40 mi. from BJU. they seem very rigid in their interpretation of Christ's teachings. I never understood how they got students to enroll.I hope this guy can get beyond this and not let this tarnish his faith.

(135,425 posts)He likely didn't want to rock the familial boat. I suspect that's the case with most "troublemakers" who go to places like that. They know the day will come when they have to let their families know that they aren't down with the sentiments and philosophies, but they're pushing back that day because they don't want to hurt the parents' feelings.

I believe this happened, just as the young man reported. The fundies are WAY the HELL out of control. And why am I not surprised that the harassment began after he started the group to end sexual abuse? Fundies think women and gays are fair game for any and all kinds of harassment and abuse--sexual, emotional, physical, you name it they're for it.
What infuriates me is that he watched "Glee" OFF-CAMPUS--at a friggin' Starbuck's! I might see a problem with him watching it on-campus...yanno, it being private property and all that. But to harass the young man when he was watching it off-campus is just reprehensible! I smell the student who reported him and the college being in cahoots...they wanted him out once he started the group against sex abuse...this was just the excuse to issue the young man a bunch of demerits and kick him out. Bastards.
