Poll: 47 percent of Russians believe the media can turn people gay

Poll: 47 percent of Russians believe the media can turn people gay

Russian polling age VTsIOM said half of those asked believed “media and propaganda” were the “key factors contributing to development of a person’s non-traditional sexual orientation”.

35 percent believed friends influenced sexual orientation, 33 percent believed parents had an effect, the state news agency said.

16 percent said a bad previous relationship with a member of the opposite sex could explain homosexuality.

April’s VTsIOM poll asked 1,600 people in 138 towns and 46 regions of Russia for their view on the causes of homosexuality, calculating a margin of error at 3.4 percent.

Well, I believe the media and friends can turn people into jerks so maybe anything is possible?

The only way you could subscribe to this general idea is to accept, aforethought, the assumption that everyone is potentially gay, and that nurture is responsible. And also that people who are exclusively straight are exercising very good self-discipline.

Someone like myself who was born gay and has been gay for as far back as I can remember (and whose heterosexual fantasies have been so few as to be actually hard to remember), or conversely for someone born straight, would not subscribe to the assumption that nurture is responsible for sexual orientation. Even many bisexual people argue that they have always been attracted to both genders.

A remarkably stupid set of beliefs considering how smart Russians are generally.
