they had bet on when their son would come out, years before - when he asked why they had not said anything to him, they said it was always his place to talk to them, not the other way around

Sen. Portman, for example. His son not only set his relationship with his father on a new course, but his father's relationship with all of US, too.

I was disowned when I came out. However, the family needed me, so it only lasted six months or so...

It makes me happy to see people love their children for who they are and not who they want them to be.
