Response as to whether there should be a boycott of the Russian Olympics.
Believe it or not, that expression has been used twice, by two different posters!
Gay people = sex in the minds of some, so-called liberals/progressives/democrats.
But there is no homophobia here, it is just in our over-active, overly sensitive minds!
If there is not a "stay at home" boycott, then I would like to see all athletes and their supporters, gay or straight, wear the pink or black triangles (from Holocaust notoriety) on their sleeves as a form of protest of the anti-gay Russian progrom!

(11,304 posts)gays. Please read my comment again. It seems to me every time a person disagrees with a gay person they are automatically against the gays. That is further from the truth. I just don't think its fair to stamp on peoples dreams. Like I said I don't believe in boycotts. I do like your last comment that people should wear ribbons to support the gay community. I like that idea. That shows support and people can choose the wear them. I would encourage my friends and family if they were going to wear them. Also about the sex thing is we send them there to do their jobs and that is what they should be doing.

(9,612 posts)is not only on homosexual activity. The mere presence of an LGBT person in the Olympic Village could lead to an arrest.
Why? An openly gay athlete is a role model for children, which can be seen as propaganda to kids under the Russian law.
Sexual activity has NOTHING to do with it.

(9,612 posts)I would, but now it takes 6 homophobes instead of just one to re-activate the "LGBT aren't allowed to alert on DU" feature from DU2.

(53,936 posts)and maybe this would be his last chance why should anyone say you he shouldn't be allowed to go because of some boycott? How dare anyone want my child to give up their dreams to satisfy your wishes. Everyone should go whether they are straight or gay and do what they are sent there for. Everyone leave their sex drive at home for a week. It won't hurt a bit.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=3389052
This was in response to the boycott of the Russian games, which is EXACTLY what I said. Did you know there is more to being gay then who we fuck? And hey, what if you had a gay kid, would that matter to you if they could be arrested for being gay?! Whether you intended it or not, your comment was very offensive, even if you did include straights. The other person who said something similar, did not include straights, but I guess he could claim the same.
southernyankeebelle
(11,304 posts)do. EVERYONE (I mean gay and straight in case you didn't get that) do what they are sent there to do. Again I said everyone leave your sex drive at home. I meant BOTH sexes. You read what you wanted to read into it. I have a close family member who is gay buddy and I got news for you. Not all gays think alike. He happens to agree with me. He said he wouldn't want a kid who worked many years to give up his dream because he is gay. I call that unselffish. But I see you see it different. That's ok. But because we disagree doesn't mean I hate the gay community and am sick of hearing it. Life is very unfair. Believe me I know how unfair life can be.
By the way I knew your comment would be made by someone just like you. Your offended because I stated what is the truth. I'm sick of hearing how some seem offended. Well the offense works the other way. Put yourself in a persons shoes whose family scarficed everything to help their kid get to the world stage. Yes am offended if you ask me to give that dream up. I would be willing to wear a ribbon and not shop in the local stores to support the gay community. But if I had a kid going well then it is another story. I don't think its fair to ask that of a person.
Behind the Aegis
(53,936 posts)I read exactly what you said, and I know what it meant. It was offensive. And you are right, not all gay people think alike, and this gay person is saying what you wrote was fucking offensive as hell! Prior to what the Russian lawmaker said, I was against a boycott, but when an implied threat is made against gay athletes, it isn't being selfish, it is being concerned about the safety of gay people, but you see the safety issue as different. That's ok.
ETA: You spoke "the truth?" OK. :eyes" Yes, you are correct though, your "truth" was fucking offensive.

(13,412 posts)Who could support such an event? Straight athletes can embrace their significant others after competing, but if a gay athlete does the same thing, they face the prospect of some gulag in Siberia, if not something worse. They can't talk about their lives publicly or be that beacon of hope and light for other people across the world because they have been forced back into the closet for 2-3 weeks.
I'm sorry, but one person's dreams are secondary to another person receiving basic human decency without facing the stress and pressure in their life as soon as they step onto Russian soil. Yet, according to you, that shouldn't matter because someone else's dreams might not be fulfilled. If American athletes cannot respect or expect the freedom and human dignity of their fellow athletes, then they are serving as pretty poor representations of American values.

(920 posts)Needs to be some kind of unwritten social understanding that the moment someone uses "I have a ______ family member/friend/pet/mailman and he agrees with me, so you're wrong!" (106,886 posts)I'd like to see the USOC support individual athlete's decision, publicly. And support ally teammates who choose to voice support for their teammates who have stood aside in protest of Russia's regressive, inflammatory legislation in re: homosexuality in their country. Sorry Putin, you're on the world stage hosting the Olympics. And gay athletes can use that same stage to shine some light on your repression.
It's called reality, get used to it.
Otherwise, I'd support a boycott. Truth be told, though, I'd rather see the teams enter the stadium with some visible support of their gay teammates whether present or not.

(35,961 posts)I saw the jury results posted in the thread and had an internal rage at the jurors who voted to leave that homophobic post alone. This one in particular had me going WTF? Since when has bigotry been 'thought-provoking'? 'The response is disturbing, but thought-provoking. No one was attacked, not TOS were violated. If you disagree, explain why you disagree. We can't hide under the bed every time something scares us.'
There is homophobia at DU, and I'm really sorry posts like that and the other one were left standing. I would have voted to hide both because it's a no-brainer that both were bigoted. That the people who posted them, as well as the majority on each jury can't see it is really disturbing
