The further toward center (Pope), the further to the left (Putin (ETA: actually it is more correct to say Russia)). They exemplify why gay rights has taken such a long-ass time and why we have so much more to overcome because along with those "people," we have the right-wing to deal with as well.

I hear you. We both know it's against DU rules to call people out, so I'll just say "consider the source".

You just have to know which way the wind is blowing. Do you remember the Hagel nomination? The fact that so-called democrats/liberals/progressives were defending a Republican appointee was bad enough, but when homophobia was brought up, the attacks were relentless. Now, I expected the defense of Hagel from the Obama "rah-rah" crowd, but they really aren't that prominent, despite the belief of some. But when others, who railed against Obama on just about every other fucking issue started cheering the nomination, that was a bit of cold water to the face.

You really want to see some freak the fuck out? Suggest that a fictional character's sexual orientation could be changed. Some lose their little minds! Be it Sherlock Holmes, Spider-man, or recently, Dr. Who.

One would think that generally left-leaning folks could muster up a little more empathy for certain segments of the population, during scary times like these.

Denial suggests that you can maintain that which was taken (in this case innocence or naivety) in spite of reality, especially when it doesn't directly affect you.

Simply put, if they loved us, there would be no laws.
