Elisa Chan defends anti-gay remarks as free speech

Councilwoman Elisa Chan said Tuesday in her first public remarks since news broke last week about her homophobic comments that “political correctness will not win the day” as she stood by what she said.

Chan's office notified the media 30 minutes before the 11 a.m. press conference. The media briefing room had as many Chan supporters in it as reporters and TV crews. She was applauded upon her entrance.

The councilwoman said she stands by her beliefs and alleges that her recorded comments were taken out of context; she also said she has an expectation of being able to be safe and free to express her personal opinions during those meetings.

Chan said she would “not change my own values of beliefs for political gain or survival.”

I can't do that. I didn't want to even read what she said but I thought I better so I could comment on it intelligently.

That's why the "fucking moron" seemed quite appropriate.
