Elton John Reveals Why He Performed In Russia, Dedicates Concert To Gay Man Killed In Hate Crime

During his controversial concert in Moscow last Friday, Elton John stated that he felt obligated to perform in Russia because didn’t want the LGBT people there to feel isolated. Paraphrasing lyrics from his nemesis good friend Madonna, the out superstar looked out at his audience filled with both gays and straights and declared that it’s music that brings the people together.

John also revealed that his performance was dedicated to the memory of Vladislav Tornovoi, a 23-year-old gay man murdered in May, who some have called “Russia’s Matthew Shepard.”

The entertainer, who has performed in the country numerous times over his career, posted the transcript of his speech on his Facebook page:

That includes the million dollar fee from Rush. Of course some think the million was better off in Rush's pocket than going to help those in need because a grand gesture is always better than a paid prescription.
Some performers think they are golden calves who, by refusing to play make some giant statement. Others understand that all performers sell tickets to all comers night after night, so preening 'I will not play for you' declarations are not even true, anyone can buy that ticket.
300 million plus that Foundation has given thus far. It is in the top 20 of organizations serving the HIV/AIDS community. Most of that money is from Elton's work or his fundraising efforts. But some of that money came from bad sources and I'm sure those who were assisted by it would have rejected Rush's million to make a statement rather than take the meds or cash the rent check.
