Related: About this forumI hope you will all forgive me...
I don't have many people to talk to about writing, other than on Facebook, and those people are all writers/readers themselves.
I co-wrote a book with a woman in England. It went up on the publisher's coming soon page on December 10th, 2013. The book comes out on January 10th, 2014. I was expecting *maybe* twenty pre-orders. Today we hit 90. I have NOTHING to judge this against. I don't know if this is really good or not, but it makes me feel better about the decision to drop days at work to concentrate on writing.
Many on DU (well, okay, on the LGBT group) have encouraged me to follow my dreams and I'm grateful for that push. It's a scary step for me to try this, but at 50 years old (in April), I'm finding I need to do something for me.
Sooooo...long story short, I'm excited, overwhelmed, antsy...and just freaking in love.
Thank you all for being there and holding my hand while I start on a new journey.

(16,862 posts)The story is called Someone to Keep Me. It's a romance novel with a very slight bit of BDSM (nothing harsh).

(11,709 posts)Congrats on getting published. I've bookmarked the site so I can get a copy as soon as I'm able to focus on something other than law books.

(16,862 posts)I found the picture online and fell in love with it. It was absolutely perfect for what we wanted to portray. The cover artist for Dreamspinner contacted the photographer and they negotiated for it. At first it didn't look like we'd get it, but the photographer agreed to terms.

(9,000 posts)to do what pleases my soul. I just turned 60 and have been doing the responsible thing all my life. I am so tired of thinking business. Anyway, I got back into wildlife photography after 30 years and go out every day. I must have some knack for it because the State of South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (not my state) used one of my photos for a public service announcement. I have been encouraged by "real" wildlife photographers, the ones that actually make a living from it, and have realized that if you want to really do something with it you need to write too. The editor of my States wildlife magazine asked me to write a article with pics for the magazine and I gave it a shot. i never wrote before and was expecting her to edit the article. She liked it as it was and will publish the story.
My point is that you need to fuel the soul with the passion that drives you. You can't go wrong.
Good luck.

(81,179 posts)Gotta admit, it takes a lot to woo me away from writing. I love it. And I really enjoy it. I highly recommend you work at it. You'll discover that the more you write, the better you get. The better a writer you become. If you invest a little time in it, your skill will sharpen and come easier - it will really start flowing. Always keep a notepad with you, too, to jot down ideas or cool words or phrases you come up with or stumble across. You never know where the ideas will come from, or a way to word something just so, or a clever turn of phrase that you don't want to forget.
What's the name of your book? I hope you keep us posted as to its progress!
BRAVO!!! Congratulations!

(13,324 posts)I have two novels and a short-story collection (all self-published) on Amazon. Though I've been thinking of going through a "real" publisher for my next (in-progress) book.
