Solidarity with the Russian and Crimean LGBT communities is NOT playing into the hands of the Cold Warriors or neocons.
I'm getting so tired of this tu quoque, pseudo-anti-imperialist attitude. Thank you so much LGBT DUers for standing up to that homophobe in the Kremlin.

Gots to love us "angry" and "loud" gay activists.
Though, I have to say I wish I could get the same support for the other group to which I belong.

(53,951 posts)At least we have a month reprieve. It does, however, show who really does and doesn't support GLBT issues.

(8,462 posts)The insane apologetics for Putin's land grab and Russia's continuing provocations in Ukraine and Moldova (accompanied by deafening silence on GLBT issues) were starting to turn me off of DU.

(10,745 posts)C'mon, folks, get real!
TBH, I could honestly understand the arguments against literalist "white privilege" in regards to U.S. ethnic issues, or the overly harsh criticisms of Obama policies just because they may not go far enough(crackdowns on political corruption, climate change action, etc.).....both of these actually have hurt us activist liberals and have played into the hands of the far-right, especially the former; just look at all the stuff you see on far-right whinge blogs trying to paint ALL of us liberals(including progressives, like myself) as "effeminate", or "self-hating", etc., "pinkos", "anti-Americans", etc.. in that regard. And the latter exposes us to even more ridicule of the same vein, while also ensuring that moderates can't be swayed to the truth. And we DON'T need ANY of that right now.
But the situation of LGBTs in these parts of Eastern Europe is the complete opposite of the above; most Americans aren't in favor of military action and would prefer to sanction the crooks & reactionary punks in Moscow instead. Exposing and continuing to discuss the very real suffering of LGBTs actually helps get the truth of the matter across, and helps solidify not just President Obama's position but also puts even more pressure on Putin. So let's keep going, and never stop.
