Duck Dynasty live show cancelled due to poor ticket sales after anti-gay controversy

An official statement from JTK Productions said it was cancelling the show, due to be held on April 26 at JQH Arena in Springfield, due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

However, according to the Springfield News-Leader, the arena’s director Keith Boaz confirmed it was due to poor ticket sales.

JTK Production’s managing partners said: “We would like to thank the community of Springfield for their warm embrace and look forward to bringing exciting acts to the Springfield area.”

The TV show’s ratings are not faring much better, with this year’s season finale seeing a 30 percent drop from the year before. The show is yet to be officially renewed for another season by network A&E.

Even Missouri is taking a pass on Duck Dynasty. Times are changing!

(Clarification: This is a cancelling of a live appearance of the cast, not the actual show. Although that has not been renewed as of yet either.)

If anything, the anti-gay controversy (publicity stunt) prolonged their run just a little bit. n/t Joe Magarac Apr 2014 #14

Next? Being assholes may prolong exposure, as may being antiquated stereotypes. Welcome to the world of shoe-button fasteners.

That whole GQ interview sounded suspicious to me. The first thing I thought then was "who set this interview up?". There was just something fishy about a grizzled hick like Phil Robinson having a talk with Gentleman's Quarterly, and I guessed it was arranged by the show's producers.

I said all along that the interview was scripted to create a renewed buzz for a show that was at the end of it's life cycle. What else could they discuss in that interview, whether a Windsor knot or a bow tie is proper for a Duck Commander hoe down? Instead, they conveniently "baited" him into saying something controversial. I never even heard of the show before that.

I think the whole stink was a publicity stunt, and I'm more convinced now. If every gay friendly fan of the show suddenly stopped watching, there wouldn't have been a blip in the ratings. There may have been some damage to sponsors, but I think viewers were tired of the act already.

...and though I didn't mention it, you may have a point. It may well have contributed to some of the downfall in ratings. I know a couple DD fans, and they don't deny that they'd been had by A&E. These people will usually argue any point I try to make about anything else, but they even comically point out how their hot wives refuse to go all Daisy Mae for the show.

I have also discussed "American Chopper" with my biker friends and they believe that whole show-including the Senior vs Junior kerfuffle-is read from a script as well, but they continue to watch. Perhaps it's because the chopper show has custom Harleys while DD has... well, I can't figure out what it has.

I think that last point may be the real reason for DD's failure. Lack of content. One fan told me this last season sucked. Whatever the reason for the loss in viewership, I'm pretty sure it isn't because gay liberals suddenly stopped watching.

My point was that the GQ interview was just as scripted as the show. I believe the interviewer was fed the questions by the show's producers, and Phil offered the answer that would create outrage. As I mentioned, I never heard of the show before then, so in a way, people who were outraged were just as duped as the fans.

On edit... Maybe it is true that many fans were turned off that A&E overplayed it's hand when fans realized that instead of watching a show about a bunch of backwards hicks, that they were actually looking into a carefully crafted mirror.
