Vegas, Dallas Mayors Face Pressure to Sign Pro-Marriage Pledge

While some of the nation's mayors won the gratitude of LGBT constituents for signing a public statement this month backing same-sex marriage, others, like mayors from Las Vegas and Dallas, are catching scorn for not joining the movement.

More than 80 mayors, including Chicago's Rahm Emanuel and New York's Mike Bloomberg, announced they were joining Mayors for the Freedom to Marry and supporting marriage equality during the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C., January 20.

In Las Vegas, Mayor Carolyn Goodman has so far apparently ducked questions on whether she intends to sign the pledge. Local lawmakers are urging her to sign because skipping it could harm LGBT tourism to the city, according to an op-ed in QVegas written by the chair of the Nevada Stonewall Democratic Caucus, Derek Washington, who is pressing the issue.

The Dallas Voice was quick to point out that that city's mayor, Mike Rawlings, has refused to sign the pledge, making it the largest city in the nation not to support the statement. Rawlings told the Voice that although he "personally" supports marriage equality, it's not something that directly affects city government, so he's staying on the sidelines.

but so far it is just getting worse. Maybe it is like the old saying, it is darkest before the dawn? Anyway, we have no intention of giving up. We are loud and in their face as much as we can be and making people talk about it. Funny, the more some of them talk the more ammo we have . We just have to remain in the light, be ready and ahead of them and eventually the politicians in this state will come as far as the people have and then we win. It is a multi-faceted problem and we are finally figuring out how to fight in all areas at once. We may very well be the last place to come around but we will and the more areas that have big progress the easier it will be for us in the magnificent intelligence vacuum called Brownbackistan.

It's not much, but my Facebook crowd is very gay rights friendly. I keep my friends list to mostly high school friends. Even the wackiest birthbagger on there is pro gay marriage. Go figure. I can assure you many of their attitudes weren't the same when we were in school.

It may help that two of the most popular guys from my school are brothers. One is openly gay and I'm actually not sure about the other. In the dance world he is legendary and is known simply as Michael. I'm told that if you are a big time professional dance officianado, you'll know who that is. You would never guess he is from a small city in Idaho.

In any case, whenever anyone posts pro gay rights stuff, no one ever makes any negative comments.
