Related: About this forumWell, we made it official on Friday
Celebrated our 24th anniversary and got married on the same day! The Clerk who officiated was so sweet and there were a few tears shed.
Thank you Maryland! We may not be legal here at home (WV) but no one can take this away. It won't be long, I hope, before we all find equality in the eyes of the law -- we've already found it in our hearts.
Lots of these for our friends here who shared in our happiness.

(4,309 posts)We worked hard for marriage equality here in Maryland. It is wonderful to see a true story of the happiness it brings.
Peace and love always to both of you!

I was born in WV and it is so frustrating that with all the rugged independence going on -so many sweet and helpful people!- there is still so much systemic bigotry.

(6,251 posts)And, I suspect, what lovely ladies those rings are attached to! My congratulations to you both. Some day, West Virginia law will catch up. Though we can be bigoted and small-minded in general (like much of the rest of the world), we can be very loving and accepting in the specific. I hope that your friends and neighbors are as happy for the two of you as those of us on DU.

(19,964 posts)My wife has a lovely collection of bi-color jewelry she inherited from family in Mexico, whilst the Celtic knot design is a nod to my Scots-Irish forebears. Believe me, we laugh about how in the world did a very cultured Latina lady from Texas end up with an old hillbilly like me? (Though I have a very mixed heritage, myself.)
We've gotten many well wishes from friends and family. My, how times have changed -- and hopefully the law will, too. Right now we're still illegal in the eyes of WV law.
Thanks for the well wishes!

(18,421 posts)They say that marriage equality leads to bestiality and incest...
Was there any of this to be found during or after the ceremony? I think Fox News would like to know.
Seriously though... Congratulations! And I hope you both bring each other 24 more years or more of wedded misery... bliss! I mean bliss!

(19,964 posts)Yes, this is what happens when you've already been together for nearly a quarter century -- we wanted to have a nice dinner in Frederick but after driving 'round and 'round and not finding a single spot to park, we decided to drive home to WV since we were already exhausted. So our honeymoon dinner was at the Waffle House! Then we got home not to a celebratory welcome but the discovery that one of our dogs need to have his butt cleaned (I won't go into details). So that's how we spent a good portion of the evening. Ain't it romantic??

(6,251 posts)The first couples have applied for marriage licenses in Cabell and Kanawha counties today. Though you had to be married in Maryland to do it on the same day as your anniversary, you should be able to apply for the legal rights of a married couple in West Virginia.
Yeah for West Virginia! And yeah for the two of you!

West Virginia drops gay marriage ban
By Erin Beck Staff writer
Same-sex couples and civil rights advocates celebrated a historic victory Thursday after West Virginia government officials said they no longer would fight efforts to allow couples of the same gender to marry in the state.
Shortly after 1 p.m., Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said his office would not defend against the lawsuit challenging the states same-sex marriage ban and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said he would direct state agencies to follow the law as interpreted by the U.S. Supreme Court, which recently refused to hear appeals of several challenges to marriage bans in other states.
A few hours later, clerks in some counties were giving marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.
Our state is known for its kindness and hospitality to residents and visitors alike, Tomblin said in his statement. I encourage all West Virginians regardless of their personal beliefs to uphold our statewide tradition of treating one another with dignity and respect. -
