In an interview with GQ, who chose him as one of their Men Of The Year cover stars, he said: If I had it my way, I never would have done it the way I did, never would have told it the way I did.

for American society, and especially for young people/athletes who happen to be gay.

He'd rather just be seen as a normal person, and for that I can't fault him. Media attention is frequently unhelpful. At the same time I'm glad he did come out publicly as it will greatly help younger people coming to terms with who they are. Hopefully he can take some consolation from that. Even though it may be difficult being in the spotlight, he is helping so many people. Show him some love for his bravery.
