Silas House play highlights LBGT struggle for fairness

BEREA, KY — Several incidents last year in and around Berea involving discrimination, violence and injustice inspired Silas House to change the focus of his script.

House, director of the Appalachian Center at Berea College and a best-selling author, had intended to write about mountain-top removal and the coal industry, he said.

However, “This Is My Heart For You,” debuting at the college’s Jelkyl Drama Center on Feb. 22, will cover topics that hit even nearer to home.

Loosely based on an incident in Hazard, the play is about two young men who are thrown out of a community-run swimming pool for accusations of “improper behavior.” The town is divided on whether the pool manager is a hero or a bigot.
