The nation's largest gay-rights organization is asking Guam residents to send messages to the territory's governor urging him to allow same-sex marriage.
James Perez Servino with the Human Rights Campaign issued a statement on the group's website Thursday saying Guam Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo is "standing in the way of marriage equality."
Guam's attorney general on Tuesday directed officials to begin processing same-sex marriage applications, which would have made Guam the first U.S. territory to recognize same-sex marriage. However, public health officials balked because this was not a court order but a directive from the attorney general.
The governor's office says the Legislature can take action or residents can vote to change the law.
Servino encourages people to send messages to the governor's office expressing their support for same-sex marriage.
