Elaine McConnell, former Fairfax supervisor, dies at 88

By Antonio Olivo January 12

Elaine N. McConnell, a former Fairfax County supervisor who founded one of Virginia’s first instructional pre-schools and played a key role in the creation of the Virginia Railway Express commuter rail line, died Jan. 10 at her home in West Springfield, Va. She was 88.

Mrs. McConnell entered office with a staunchly conservative social agenda. She supported an effort to restrict children’s access to county library materials on abortion and suicide and called for the removal of the Washington Blade, a gay newspaper, from county libraries.
