NY Archbishop Forbids Catholics from Congratulating Gay Newlyweds

Roman Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan has put out something of a PSAnti-gay, entitled The Dolan Decree. It begins as a veritable greatest hits compilation of homophobic Catholic soundbites. God’s law trumps man’s law, It’s Adam and Eve – not Adam and Steve, all bottoms are headed to hell, and Jesus was a raging top.
Blah blah blah. Catholics are obsessed with gay people. We get it.
But then the decree takes a sharp right turn and steers right off a cliff into Even Crazier Town, the affluent suburb to the north of Crazy Town proper’s city limits.
Dolan, on behalf of the Catholic Church, forbids Catholics from even being happy for their newly married gay friends or offering congratulations. Failure to comply with this perversion of law from their all-knowing, all-loving god that hates some of the things he lovingly created in his own image will result in canonical sanctions – a fancy way of saying priest court.

My worry is that the current Republican crowd is trying to recreated that century in our lifetime.

flailing about in the ocean with no one around to grasp hold of to save themselves.

The church has been urged for years to move along with the times but their refusal makes them look irrelevant and antiquated.

7. His former Archdiocese has been accused of covering up 8,000 cases of child sexual abuse.

When Dolan was Archbishop of Milwaukee, at least 8,000 cases of sexual abuse against children - more than 100 victims - were hidden. Dolan had the Archdiocese declare bankruptcy to avoid liability.

Sealed documents filed in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee bankruptcy identify at least 8,000 instances of child sexual abuse and 100 alleged offenders - 75 of them priests - who have not previously been named by the archdiocese, a victims' attorney said Thursday.

...

"We need to know who they are and where they are. How can there be 8,000 crimes committed by over 100 offenders and there be no accountability?" he said.

....

In an emotional preamble to her ruling, before a packed courtroom, Kelley expressed a reverence for the Catholic Church and compassion for the victims, saying she was "brought to tears more than once" reading the accounts of the men and women who allege they were sexually abused as children by priests, deacons, nuns, teachers and others over the past 60 years.

...

Victims' attorneys had characterized the church's objections as a test case that, if successful, would have eliminated 95% of the claims in the bankruptcy.

Some in the RCC hierarchy think it's a violation of Catholics' rights to have birth control coverage in their health insurance, but Catholics are forbidden to congratulate newly-married gay couples?

Talk about micro-managing.
