Cyndi Lauper to get United Nations award for her LGBTQ work

Singer, songwriter and producer Cyndi Lauper will be the first-ever recipient of the new High Note Global Prize.

The award is presented in conjunction with United Nations Human Rights and the High Note Global Initiative. The latter was set up by philanthropist David Clark to honor artists who use their music and profile to advance social justice issues.

Lauper, 66, is receiving the award in recognition of her True Colors United organization. She established the organization in 2008 to help LGBTQ homeless youth.

According to its website, True Colors, “implements innovative solutions to youth homelessness that focus on the unique experiences of LGBTQ young people.” Since its inception, it has helped thousands of young people to find shelter and help when they most need it.

An estimated 40% of homeless youth in the US are believed to belong to the LGBTQ community.
