Girl Scout and her queer little libraries

The amazing true story of the "Little Queer Library" and the Girl Scout behind it

When Amelia Hare, a fourth-generation Girl Scout, sought the organization's highest honor, the Gold Award, it was no surprise to the women in her family.

However, she had no idea just how many twists and turns lay ahead over the next four years, including a global pandemic, remote learning, and business closures.

"I had a bunch of places in my community near my school where I was hoping to install these little Queer libraries that I had planned to build myself," she said. "I finished one completely and I started on the second, which was very large. Then, the pandemic happened.

I visited Amelia’s website and it’s beautifully done. It would have meant the world to me (when I was young) to have access to an affirming resource like this. It’s also a positive response to some very repressive messaging from the right-wing. I’ll be reposting this story within my own network of friends.

By the way, I recommend the graphic novel, “Heartstopper”. I saw it on Amelia’s site and remembered how I read it in one sitting. I’m looking forward to reading a few of her featured books, too.

Helped me survive pandemic big library closures.

And I’m so glad to see the next generation coming up happy and healthy despite despicable oppressions.

Thanks for your great post. Spreading the word (so to speak) far and wide to inspire others to do likewise.
