Oklahoma gov signed bill banning trans girls from school sports while surrounded by cis girls

The governor of Oklahoma signed a law banning transgender girls from participating in school sports, surrounded by cisgender girls while a transgender woman stood outside his office protesting.

The “Save Women’s Sports Act” will require parents to sign an affidavit that states the sex assigned at birth to their child as a prerequisite to participating in school sports. The law also allows the families of cisgender student-athletes to sue school districts if they are forced to compete against all girls instead of just cisgender girls.

The bill was passed by the Republican-controlled Oklahoma House and Senate mostly along party lines and affects both high school and college athletics.

“When it comes to sports and athletics, girls should compete against girls,” Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) said as he signed the bill. “Boys should compete against boys.”

Gov. Shitt would seemingly have more than right-wing support on this type of legislation. Frankly, that is what is really disgusting.

GOV. COX: WHY I’M VETOING HB11

Mr. President and Mr. Speaker,

...

Finally, there is one more important reason for this veto. I must admit, I am not an expert on transgenderism. I struggle to understand so much of it and the science is conflicting. When in doubt however, I always try to err on the side of kindness, mercy and compassion. I also try to get proximate and I am learning so much from our transgender community. They are great kids who face enormous struggles. Here are the numbers that have most impacted my decision: 75,000, 4, 1, 86 and 56.

· 75,000 high school kids participating in high school sports in Utah.
· 4 transgender kids playing high school sports in Utah.
· 1 transgender student playing girls sports.
· 86% of trans youth reporting suicidality.
· 56% of trans youth having attempted suicide.

Four kids and only one of them playing girls sports. That’s what all of this is about. Four kids who aren’t dominating or winning trophies or taking scholarships. Four kids who are just trying to find some friends and feel like they are a part of something. Four kids trying to get through each day. Rarely has so much fear and anger been directed at so few. I don’t understand what they are going through or why they feel the way they do. But I want them to live. And all the research shows that even a little acceptance and connection can reduce suicidality significantly. For that reason, as much as any other, I have taken this action in the hope that we can continue to work together and find a better way. If a veto override occurs, I hope we can work to find ways to show these four kids that we love them and they have a place in our state.

I recognize the political realities of my decision. Politically, it would be much easier and better for me to simply sign the bill. I have always tried to do what I feel is the right thing regardless of the consequences. Sometimes I don’t get it right, and I do not fault those who disagree with me. But even if you disagree with me, I hope this letter helps you understand the reasons for my decision.

So I imagine I'm missing something about that picture.

That said: Real cute... "Save women's sports" Today, sure. But don't worry, boys and girls... The attacks upon Title IX will begin real soon. I mean, damnit.. That money could do so much more good going to the football and male basketball programs!

Right, I mean right!

This is yet ONE more bill that is going to be challenged in OK and fought at the taxpayer's expense as opposed to putting that money to something for all Oklahomans, like bridges! I know there are some in the wings who are already planning the legal strategy here to fight this bigotry in court.

The picture reminds me of what a friend once sarcastically called the Princeton basketball team in the 90's... "A picket fence".

And you're right. That's just insult on top of injury.. The bills are bad enough. But now they're going to waste taxpayer's money because these are going to be fought in court. Of course, it's never, ever the goons in three piece suits who signed these into law who pay for the lawsuits. Nope. It's the taxpayers...

Just like what us Californians had to endure last year because "freedumb" fighters wanting to whine about masks and vaccines and social distancing wasted our money trying to recall the governor... Only to watch Newsom get a higher percentage of the votes in the recall than he did when initially elected.

But, hey... Let's hear it for the party of fiscal responsibility and personal freedom!

That said.. Let's hope this gets struck down in the courts, and struck down hard.
