It's an inconvenient truth, in this case, but the bottom line is this:
Iran treats women like shit.
They had more rights under Shah--not that his regime was a walk in the park, but he was very progressive on the women's issues.
You will hear people denying this, even here, insisting that women are happy to be forced to wear their hijab and manteau in ninety degree heat--but I can tell you that women are treated better than dogs and worse than farm animals--oh, and dogs are "haram" so that gives you an idea of where they suffer on the Persian 'rights' scale.
Good that Canada is pointing this out. We always used to be the only scolds in town, while people talked about "culture" and "who are we to judge..." -- well, maybe a little judging is in order.
The purpose of the women's commission is to "set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and women's empowerment worldwide." Now there are currently women's rights activists in Iran and we wish them well. But they will not be the voices represented at this committee.
While some people want to ignore how ridiculous the UN has become, Canada has taken a stand in the past and must again.
Our delegates have walked out to protest former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's speeches at the UN.
We're not currently a member of the women's commission, but we need to keep sending such messages.
No more moral relativism at the UN.
