50 Bravest Movie Heroines

50

Dorothy Gale (The Wizard Of Oz)

The Heroine: Though sometimes a bit of a damsel in distress, there’s no denying Dorothy’s bravery in the face of some pretty unusual things – not least a talking lion and flying monkeys…

Bravest Moment: It’s done slightly by accident, but Dorothy discovers the key to the Wicked Witch’s undoing when she splashes her with water, causing her to melt.

From getting Melanie, Prissy & the baby through enemy lines to Tara, sustaining all with meager crops to the end of the war and afterwards, killing the renegade looting Union soldier... Yes, though eye-raising from today's feminist standards, in terms of her manner of manipulating men to do her bidding-- she also had episodes of fierce independence and strong survival instincts as well.

And resourceful, especially when all her upbringing did was educate her to be pretty and airheaded and marry well.

She also took care of her family, including the Wilkes, and decided friending Yankees and eating was better than starving with honor.

Yes, she was often selfish and "Mean Girl," but at heart she was loyal and brave. I like her, too.

did the movies not exist before about 1990 except for the Wizard of Oz. I can think of many women in all types of movies from the beginning of the first movie who didn't have to wear leather or wield a sword or set spells to be great role models.

And the only real "Xena" character was Catwoman.

I think this says how bad many roles were for women before the 70's.

So glad "Hattie" from "True Grit" made it!

I would have Katniss Everdeen higher, and would have added Jennifer Lawrence's character Ree Dolly from "Winter's Bone."

And, I would have taken out GI Jane and added Amy Bradshaw from D.E.B.S. (yes, really).

Where is Brigitte Fitzgerald from the 2001 Canadian horror movie Ginger Snaps?

Why? Let's see. A fifteen-year-old high school outcast going against a raging werewolf with nothing but a syringe in her hand? She faints doing it, but that was her body surrendering, not her. Then she gets back up and continues, without the syringe.

For bravery, I'd put her up there with Ripley. Whether she surpasses Ripley is a matter of opinion, though you must consider Brigitte was far less equipped and prepared than the Alien(s) protagonist. Omitting Brigitte totally from the list is just fucked.

It's just that the author wasn't going to promote an independent Canadian movie that didn't get US theatrical release next to Hollywood films.

"I am no man!" was one of the greatest lines ever, and if it wasn't for her...

I was glad to see Hermione Granger on the list, though.

It was nice to see Ripley at #1. There's a couple I would swap out--I think Niobe from the Matrix trilogy should have been included since she's kick-ass in her own right even though not the lead character. Hard to find video of her scenes, but this one is good:

If you're kicking ass, you have to be stunningly beautiful while at it.

That repetitive message in the media gets really boring after awhile.

The character was brave in all meanings of the word, without special effects or swords or funky martial arts moves.

Also, Helen Parr. One of the best animated characters and best animated voice-acting performances ever, I think.

They could have left out the slasher heroines. They tend to be cookie cutter stereotypes.

I'd have Lisbeth Salander in the top ten. Both actresses who played her were fantastic, so they could put her in the top ten twice, IMHO. Also, Katness Everdeen and Maggie Fitzgerald should be higher.

But fun list Lots of characters I'd half forgotten.

And I agree with the posters who say Scarlet and Buffy should be there. They are top ten material, easily. Scarlet could be number one. I can't quibble with Ripley--in the context of her time, she was freaking awesome.
