Shoukhrat Mitalipov and his team were able to make embryonic stem cells from adult mouse body cells. They used the cytoplasm of two embryos that were in the interphase stage of the cell cycle, a later stage of the cell cycle.
Scientists previously had thought this stage was incapable of converting transplanted adult cell nuclei into embryonic stem cells and only the metaphase stage of egg cytoplasm could produce embryonic stem cells. These cells are more accessible than the traditional egg cells that are in short supply.
Our study shows that this reprogramming capacity remains in the later embryonic cell cytoplasm, Mitalipov said in a statement. It looks like the factors continue working and they efficiently reprogram the cells.
While other scientists have attempted to reprogram cells by interphase cytoplasm, Mitalipov found that the key was to synchronize the cell cycle of the adult cell nucleus and the recipient embryonic cytoplasm.
