‘Barnyard’ Teaches Doctors Bedside Skills
Story by Gisela Telis

Life as a medical student isn’t just about learning anatomy or practicing how to do a physical. At the University of Arizona College of Medicine, it can also include a little horsing around.

<snip>

Because horses are so sensitive to nonverbal cues, students have to learn to quiet themselves and stay in the moment, Hamilton says, and that enables them to finally listen to their patients.

“As doctors, we’re very verbal people and we’re used to using our brains and our words to solve problems,” Ottman says. “And what I like about this is we have to calm down and connect with our energy and our bodies. And since in medicine we’re interacting with the patient’s body and energy and emotions, I think that’s why this is particularly valuable.”

Kind of interesting intersection of practical healing techniques and a what some might call woo (unless you have ever spent time around horses).

my doctor appointments are all about the doctor entering information into his computer and searching for the right data base. When he is through filling out his forms and entering why I am there, he swings around and completes the appointment with the statement of what to do.
I don't think horses can help with data entry, or can they?

I was accompanying my niece to a doctor's appt. There was a new young guy in training and she got her visit for free, because her regular doctor knows she has no insurance and made a deal to have the trainee do the work-up.

He indeed spent a lot of time entering data - not easy with our somewhat non-conforming weirdness, but he also did a good job actually examining her. Between his hunch and the computer a pretty likely diagnosis was arrived at and a treatment plan given.

I had to say something about wondering how long before the computer puts them out of business - probably a phone app going to be available soon. LOL

Things have changed a lot from when I was a kid.
