Which should I blame, Netfucks or 20th Century Fucks?
Trying to start up the 20th Century Fucks movie "12 Years a Slave" on a DVD, I ran into the usual pile of advertisements for other movies. But this time I could neither skip past nor fast forward through the shit. I'd like to know which company perpetrated this outrage.

(28,702 posts)i just watched a netflix video without commercials, and often do.
i blame the greedy corporations who won't put their extras on the rental dvd's too - a lousy ploy to make you buy one. i enjoy watching the extras but not that much so fuck the fucks and their fucking greed.
i love netflix and hope it never changes. haha

(4,073 posts)I wasn't aware of the difference between rental DVDs and those you can buy, except that Netflix makes their rental disks extra-sturdy so they will last as long as possible. There must be some kind of deal between Netflix and the owners of copyrights, which are typically studios. It seems to me that if 20th C. Fucks insists on making the rental disk unattractive in various ways, such as piling on advertisements and not allowing them to be bypassed, or removing extras, then Netflix should warn us about those degradations before we rent the disks.

(9,696 posts)Kills me that some rental DVDs don't have extras or commentaries - for those you have to buy the disc. Which is stupid, if I"m renting the disc, would not buy it just to watch a commentary.
Sometimes jumping to the menu instead of fast forwarding gets me through the ads, though it varies with disc. I've only had one disc that could absolutely not be skipped forward.

(26,117 posts)Ads should be skippable.

(4,073 posts)Furthermore, it should be EASY to skip the fucking ads.
That's one of the reasons I don't go to movie theaters any more. Most movie theaters show a shitload of ads before they show the movie. The other reason I don't go to movie theaters is that they crank the volume up to the point where it hurts my ears. The teenage "managers" can't or won't get the volume turned down.
Movie ads (aka "previews" or "trailers" are among the worst, because:
1. They are often deceptive. (The purpose of the ad is to make you want to see the movie, not to describe it accurately.)
2. They often contain spoilers. (I don't want to know ahead of time what is going to happen in the middle or at the end of the movie.)
