The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio
This is based on a true story and stars Julianne Moore and Woody Harleson. Set in the 50s and 60s, it is a story of a housewife who supports her family of 10 children and a ne'r do well husband with prize winnings. Those were the days when contests relied on skill rather than chance. (I had an old family friend who did the same thing. Among her winnings was a brand new 1952 Ford.)
Moore, as always, is wonderful. The film is somewhat stylized with Moore acting as narrator, and is all the more interesting for it. I'm not wild about Harleson's performance, but his is a minor part of the story.
Give this one a try. I think you'll like it.
