The Last Kingdom Season 2

Showed up this last weekend. Sadly, I consumed it all too quickly and have to wait another year or so.

For those who don't know it, it takes place in the time of Alfred the Great, following the adventures of a Saxon raised by Danes, Uhtred. The books at the base of this, the Saxon Chronicles, are by Bernard Cornwell, creator of another notably prickly and flawed warrior, Richard Sharpe. (Uhtred, though, is not Sharpe in skins.)

Lovely, lovely visuals, violent battles, and thoughtful relationships. Ain't no one perfect here, but very few that would be classified as pure villain, either. A clash of cultures between Saxon and Viking.

For me the difference between the first season and second is that I went through the "History of Anglo Saxon England" series of podcasts and understand a lot more of the politics now and context. First season, then, was a great adventure story, but not more for me. This season, I'm like, "Ohhh--don't piss her off. she becomes super-powerful in a few years..."

Anyway, I recommend it for folks interested in the time, or just general wide-sweeping adventures like Game of Thrones, without the magic.
