"The Sinner" starring Bill Pullman USA Network / Netflix

Last edited Sat Aug 10, 2019, 11:36 AM - Edit history (1)

The Sinner is an American anthology crime drama mystery television series, based on the novel of the same name by German crime writer Petra Hammesfahr. Eight episodes of the program, originally conceived of as a "close-ended series", were ordered in January 2017 and premiered on USA Network on August 2, 2017. In March 2018, the series was renewed for a second season, also of eight episodes, which premiered on August 1, 2018, and concluded on September 19, 2018. In March 2019, the series was renewed for a third season.

The first season of The Sinner received two nominations at the 75th Golden Globe Awards: Best Miniseries or Television Film and Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film for Jessica Biel. Biel was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

Airs on USA Network which just announce a 3rd season. Season 1 & 2 are on Netflix.

Good story, but true to German drama very methodical and subtle. Although German in origin, all seasons take place in US. Hints of mysticism/cult season 2. Each episode (total of 8 each season) runs about 48 minutes on Netflix, hour show minus the ads. Season 1 held my rapt attention and Season 2 is as well.

The last half of the series dragged and was pretty much anti-climatic.
As much as I like Bill Pullman, he was beginning to get on my last nerve in the final episodes. Soooo conflicted and then he'd have a flash of brilliance, or so laid back, tortured and confused, and then be like a commanding general. Fast forwarded through a lot of unnecessary dialogue. I wanted to strangle the Vera Walker character. It was never explained why the kid kept getting those manic episodes, or who all those men were that kept coming to the compound. Was the place some sort of sexual pervert retreat? And what happened to the guy who was the leader of the commune...Lionel Jefferies? Lots of loose ends.

I'll watch Season 3, but hope it's better.

It was an exciting day when Season 2 of The Sinner, Jessica Biel's brainchild, finally arrived on Netflix. It's sort of like True Detective in that each season is a standalone mystery, and Season 2 centers on a young boy, Julian, who starts off confessing to the murder of his parents.

But considering the twisted premise (Season 1 is based on a German crime novel), and all the roadblocks the community encounters regarding this baffling case, many viewers are left wondering what exactly happened during the ending of The Sinner.

Fans' biggest gripe with this season of The Sinner is that it didn't feel as tight as Season 1. The "why" doesn't really come full-circle to explain the startling events of the first episode the way it does in Cora's season. "This season... zzzzzzz," writes one redditor.

So I'm starting there. On Episode 7. I must say it seems a bit dragged out. I hope season 1 moves at a better clip. I like things to wrap up in a couple hours.
