Another update on an Aspie son.
I have a son who is an Aspie, and I've posted about him any number of times here. He'll be thirty in a month, and like so many Aspies his life has been something of a struggle.
And, like so many, he is amazingly smart especially at science. He's back in school pursuing a physics degree. Physics was his major his first time out in college, and after flunking out of two colleges, he eventually got a CAD (computer aided drafting) degree at his nearby junior college. It took a while, but he eventually got a contract drafting job, but it came to an end and he couldn't find another one, which is partly why he returned to school.
A couple of days ago I called him up to say, "Why don't you drive out to visit me over New Year's?" and he had to tell me that his old firm called him up and offered him a part time job, which will be full time over the winter break. I'm disappointed I won't get to see him, but thrilled both that he's earning money, and that they called him up. I know a lot of Aspies have trouble keeping jobs because of their Aspie traits, but my son doesn't seem to have those parts of Asperger's. He's one of the ones who can be put off in a room by himself and he will be incredibly productive, because he just works. He's not at all social, so doesn't spend any time chatting with co-workers, for instance. Totally unlike his mother, I might add.
Anyway, I just want to remind everyone having Asperger's is not a tragedy, and that there can be some good things about it. I cannot imagine my son any other way, and even though, like any parent, I worry about him, so far things are working out for him.
