More migraine treatments

So my son went for his 3rd botox treatment. They increased the dose. Next time he will find out if they continue or not. But we were given 3 more medications to look into. Aimovig, Emgality and Ajovy. They all have assistance cards to help with cost. I guess I have more research to do. I had heard of Aimovig but not the others. Here's hoping for healing and peace of mind for my son.

1. Migraines are so incapaciting

I have been able to get them under control my avoiding food triggers. This doesn't always work but I have been able to avoid the meds. I tried one of the meds and just felt awful under it.

2. I hope he finds something that works for him.

I've been getting botox injections for migraine for 4 years. It took about 3 sessions before I noticed a real difference. Life saver!

3. I wish you and your son well in this endeavor. Migraines are awful.

I experienced them when I took a birth control pill years ago. I hope he finds a solution soon.

4. Aimovig

I have a diagnosis of chronic migraine. Have been unable to do very much for the last eight years because there are so many triggers for me.

I have been taking the monthly injections of Aimovig for six months and have seen a great reduction in the severity and frequency of my migraine attacks. It's not a cure, but it sure is making it easier for me to again have a life.

5. i believe these are essentially the same medication

aimovig and emgality are both monthly with an self-injecting pen.

ajovy is monthly or quarterly injection with a prefilled syringe.

in practice, i think pricing would be the main consideration, which in turn depends on what insurance you have; or if you can get some assistance cards which manufacturers are offering for a while.


i started aimovig as soon as my insurance would approve it. so far so good, really no side effects, and i've had fewer migraines,

it helps, but doesn't eliminate the problem. i've had terrible luck with migraine prophylaxis medications, so for me even a small beneficial effect is huge.

6. My doctor who gave me my Botox injections said it takes

about 9 months for it to fully kick in and that is when it finally worked for me. I was told that if I still get some migraines I can inject myself with Aimovig but so far decided not to. I have them every day and a sip of coffee, 3 aspirins and tylenol usually work if I take them as soon as I feel one starting. If I still have it half an hour later I take Sumaritan and that usually does the trick.

I found out that the reason I had a killer headache for 2 weeks was that I had a high fever for a week and that triggered the headache. My doctor said ANY FACTOR that is new/different can trigger a migraine...from low humidity to an infection.
