Related: About this forumPotato patties: everyone I know doesn't know what the hell these are.
They go, "you mean potato pancakes?" NO.
Nuke a potato or two (more than two if they're red potatoes) peel them (don't really have to do that), mash them in a bowl, add 1 large egg (two if small), stir, add 2/3 cup of flour (more or less), stir, add milk and stir until batter looks like pancake batter more or less. The patties are supposed to be brown on both sides. Cook in olive oil.
Important part: eat with ketchup. It's not complete without ketchup. Can't stress enough on the ketchup.
Anyways, that's one of my favorite, "I shouldn't eat too much of this" thing.

(11,910 posts)She probably used closer to 1/3 cup of flour and only a couple of tablespoons of milk, if needed. She would form them into 'patties' and fry them. Sometimes she would grate a bit of onion into them YUM!!!
We used to eat them with ketchup or a pat of butter on top.

(106,886 posts)Formed into patties with salt & pepper, let set and then browned in oil. Finished with grated cheese on top sometimes or plated with gravy.

(1,399 posts)Added about a half cup of fine grated parmesan cheese, add less milk and about 3-5 eggs, make a very thick batter and let stand awhile, then drop by spoonfuls & deep fry quickly in peanut oil. Grated onion good, too.
Called them potato puffs.

(24,853 posts)I don't need catsup, just a little salt will do if they're sufficiently browned on both sides!

(51,666 posts)leftover mashed potatoes in our home: shepherds's pie, and my favorite potato patties. I don't think Mom added the beaten egg or milk, so they tended to fall apart, but I loved them anyway. Just salt and pepper on them - no ketchup. And of course fried in shortening - I don't think we even had olive oil in the house.
