Day six, the last day and arrival in New York. Arrival occurred shortly after noon, so only Breakfast and Lunch were served.
"NO FRUIT LOOPS!" I remember specifically our waiter telling us that there were no Fruit Loops to be had! They had actually run out of them two days before, so yesterday and today we were told in his interesting accent that there were "NO FRUIT LOOPS!" It came out sort of.... "NO frooodlooops!"

All through this journey the conversations we would have with members of the crew indicated they were all, to the man, worried about their jobs. None were sure if this would be the last crossing or not. Some said they had heard she was to be doing Caribbean cruises. Others said an around-the-world cruise was in the offing. Others said it would be the Pacific for sure. Still others were convinced they would get their walking papers when we docked and she would be mothballed. As it turned out, she continued to make voyages for another 2 years. By mid 1969 however, her fate was sealed and in November of that year the United States Lines announced her "Indefinite Lay-up"
She needs to be saved. It would be a national tragedy if this fine example of American Naval Architecture and shipbuilding were to be sent to some dismal ship breaking beach in India or Bangladesh, as was the fate of one of her contemporaries, the SS France/Norway.

(This series was in NO WAY meant to tug at your heartstrings and then make a pitch to save this ship, it's just that I got a little sentimental, that's all)
A 4 minute trailer for the documentary "Lady in Waiting";
I hope you found this series interesting.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)But I did it this way so as to coincide with the anniversary dates. I thought it would be dignified.
My apologies if you found 6 consecutive threads somewhat less than spellbinding.

(7,720 posts)I am interested in your topic. I just am less interested in the anniversary of the threads as opposed to the content, especcially on an iPhone. I'll check it out with a computer.

(175,729 posts)That lunch menu has some really ugh items, like the pig knuckles and honeycomb tripe. My mother used to eat tripe and make something else for the rest of us (my father included) while we made faces.
I've really enjoyed these threads.
