Cooking & Baking
Related: About this forumWhat are you making today for dinner tomorrow?
Today I'm making two sugar-free pumpkin pies, one regular pumpkin pie, one pecan pie, and refrigerator dough for the rolls that will be baked in the morning. I may make the dressing and park it in the refrigerator until tomorrow.

(44,576 posts)I guess I'll have to buy the pie shell unless I can make one with wheat flour. And my turkey thighs are thawing.
Side dishes -- mashed potatoes and broccoli with homemade cheddar cheese sauce.

(15,088 posts)Try this recipe for a pat-in-the-pan crust from King Arthur. I make it with whole wheat and it's very decent. Not as good as a butter crust, but decent:

For the turkey dressing.
I will probably make something for dessert, I don't know what -- it will NOT be pumpkin pie, since pumpkin pie is a sign that Satan is working to bring the world to perdition.
Since it will be only my wife, one of our sons and me for Thanksgiving, I an cooking just a turkey breast. Mashed potatoes, gravy, the dressing, cranberry sauce and glazed carrots.

(15,088 posts)My family would never put up with no pumpkin pie. It's one of those traditions like canned cranberry sauce that you can never ever deviate from.

(4,473 posts)The first group is wrong; the second group has a functioning sense of taste.
Garrison Keillor said, ""Pumpkin pie is the epitome of mediocrity. The best pumpkin pie you've ever had isn't that much different than the worst pumpkin pie you've ever had." Admittedly, I have had some pumpkin pie that was completely inedible, but I basically agree with him. Pumpkin pie is no more than a delivery vehicle for nutmeg and cinnamon.
I once tried using butternut squash in a pumpkin pie recipe. It tasted just as nasty as if I had used pumpkin.

(15,088 posts)Pumpkin pie is a favorite here and Thanksgiving is unthinkable without it. We don't go all fancy with squash--we make pumpkin pie the traditional way from a can like the Pilgrims intended

(7,572 posts)Apple pie, cherry pie, cornbread dressing, and corn on the cob. I'm also making an apple spice cake, extra.
My holiday catastrophe: (not really a catastrophe but very annoying) an invasion of ants in my kitchen. I'm attacking them with vinegar-water spray. They've already gotten into everything in my pantry which was opened, cereal, crackers, etc... I'm just going to have to let them play until after Thanksgiving, then completely clean out the pantry and spray. I'll let them have that area so perhaps they will not find the baking products stored in a different location!!
Is there a nontoxic spray I can use in the pantry after I remove and throw stuff away?

(2,012 posts)use Raid Ant Gel; comes in a tube. Use a small amount directly on ants, door jambs etc. They love it and carry it back to the nest outside. It works well but don't use it any place family or pets will touch it.

(29,098 posts)I've made two dressings
The regular sausage/apple and a new one this year artichoke/mushroom/ham/parm
I have done the sweet potato apple casserole with the candied pecans
Roasted a beet for the salad
I have made the Italian Cream/raspberry trifle
And I have pitted a dozen dates to fill with goat cheese and wrap with prosciutto in the am
Tomorrow I throw the turkey in, make the gravy and mashed potatoes and warm a challah in the oven. I'll make a small composed salad with some arugala, pomegranates, golden beets and a smidge of fresh farmers cheese with a white balsamic vinaigrette
I made some chopped liver two days ago but I doubt there will be any left before we sit down to eat.
