Any appetizer ideas to take to a Super Bowl party?

What I am shooting for:

1. finger food

2. not fried since it would be soggy by the time we get there - and don't want to cook there.

3. hopefully unique and delicious with a wow factor.

Really easy and people love it. Preheat oven to 350. Arrange bacon on a rack over a baking sheet and top with brown sugar. You can mix a bit of chili powder or cayenne pepper into the brown sugar if you like. Bake for 15 or 20 minutes until the bacon is crispy. Here's a site with pictures:

I made this last year and it was a big hit.

We don't really know the hosts very well and can't see messing up their kitchen.

on that link they show bacon with a scalloped edge. Never saw that before - very cool. also, guess that is some kind of napkin wrapped around?

thanks. be easy to practice before trying for real.

wrap bacon around those Little cocktail sausages (not weenies, the smoked sausage ones)...

THEN cover liberally with brown sugar and bake in oven. You will get requests for these for life. AND, you can make a buttload of them on a cookie sheet covered in foil

It's super bowl food, so it is not really good for you, but yummy as hell. These things lfy off the tray. Make two sheets full. Three if you have a large crowd coming.

4. Here's what i did last year

I prepared a lot of fresh finger vegetables like carrot sticks, celery, cherry tomatoes, etc. Basically all the stuff you get with those $10 vegetable party plates, except I'm not going to pay $10 and just make it myself.

Then I made a dip by mixing 1 8oz package of soft cream cheese with 1/4 cup picante sauce in my stand mixer.

I'm not sure I'd call it unique, but it was a big hit because everyone else brought fried stuff(much of it that got soggy). The dip is ridiculously simple yet delicious and you can adjust the heat by the picante sauce you buy. It goes great with vegetables.

those honed baby carrots that don't even seem like carrots to me. You are right. Went to a party recently where someone took the time to beautifully display vegetables pared by hand. It was such a stark difference in appeal. Not sure about cheaper - but so much better. Thanks MN

8. Cream cheese & pickles on baby rye
Sun Jan 26, 2014, 02:36 PM
Jan 2014

My daughter asks for this every Christmas. Spread baby rye with soft cream cheese and top with a thin slice of kosher-garlic pickle, sprinkle with a little dill (optional). Serve at room temperature. Great flavor combination and you can make ahead and keep refrigerated.

Spread cream cheese on tortilla, cover with diced chives, dust with paprika. Roll up tight and chill. Slice in bite sized rounds.

It's an easy one to include other add ons - diced chilies, a layer of prosciutto, etc. Have fun!

Pesto stuffed mushrooms and bacon wrapped jalapenos

small modification on the jalapeno poppers, I usually add a splash of teryaki sauce and some finely chopped onions to the creamcheese mix. make sure you get all the membranes out of the peppers so they aren't too spicy. I also precook the bacon a little so it comes out crunchy in the end...

the mushrooms always get rave reviews and can be served cold or room temp (as can the jalapenos) just simple ricotta, pesto and breadcrumbs for stuffing...

you can google simple recipes for these...

25. Chili Cheese Log
Tue Jan 28, 2014, 08:39 PM
Jan 2014

8 oz block cream cheese
8 oz block Sharp Cheddar Cheese
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 (or 2) tablespoons Tabasco Sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans
1/3 to 1/2 cup Gebhardts chili powder

Have cream cheese at room temperature. Grate the sharp cheddar in large bowl. Add cream cheese, milk, pepper, Tabasco sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. You can run in the food processor or just work it with a spoon until all is well mixed and the cheddar starts to blend in with the cream cheese. I usually work with a spoon, too much trouble to get out the food processor.

Spread some waxed paper or parchment paper on counter, sprinkle about half the chili powder and pecans on the paper. Divide the cheese mixture into two parts. Take one part of the cheese mixture and loosely from into log. Roll the log in the chili powder-pecan mixture. As you roll it, it will pickup the chili powder and pecans and will get longer and the right size to be sliced and eaten on a cracker. Cover roll with aluminum foil, sealing ends and seams tightly. Wash your hands, this is a messy recipe. Then make a roll with the last part of the cheese mixture. Wrap in foil and place both in the fridge to chill, overnight is best.

Take the two "logs" and some good crackers to the party - from now on you always be asked to bring your cheese logs.

Note, don't use pre-grated cheese, it has been covered in potato flour which keeps it from blending. Use sharp cheddar, not mild.
