Spaldeen's thread has sparked a question I want to ask (and it's weird, even for me)

Have any of you noticed any weirdness when eating fresh fruit and then having water, which then creates a really bad taste in your mouth?

If I eat fresh pineapple and forget and grab a drink of my (filtered tap) water too soon, it is really awful and bitter....really makes me wonder what sort of chemical reaction is going on...The pineapple on its own is delicious.
Have you noticed anything like that with fresh fruit...or is it just more of my weirdness? It's got me a little suspicious of my filtered water...

Is your water chlorinated? How do you filter it? n/t PoliticAverse Apr 2014 #1

Most water filters just don't do that much. They will remove large particulate contamination like dissolved metals (provided they are in your water to begin with) and they will remove chlorine, both of which can affect taste. However there's all sorts of other things that can affect taste.

Pineapples have a very low PH (acidic). My guess is your water has a very high PH. It's quite common for municipal water supplies to be 8+ while pineapples are closer to 4. Try adding a few drops of lemon juice to your water and see what happens.
