Put a clove or an entire head into a jar with a lid.
Start shaking.
HARD
Keep it up.
Eventually the head will break up. the cloves will peel.
It works.

(20,453 posts)I saw the perfect jar that I was getting ready to re-cycle, but used for this (Aztec hot sauce, wide enough mouth to drop whole garlic bulb).
I threw in the whole bulb, which was reaching the state where green chutes were growing out of it. I also through in some individual cloves that I had not peeled yet. I shook it several times very vigorously and it worked beautifully!
Better late than never. This will lessen my kitchen tasks significantly, since I love to use whole garlic.
Thought ya'll would like to know!
