Vegetable soup. I picked the most gorgeous kale in the garden this afternoon. Also fresh thyme. So far the soup has onions, garlic, carrots, tomatoes, and kale. In one version, I'll put in a few of the black-eyed peas from yesterday's Hoppin' John. For another version, I have some roast beef that I could mince and make it vegetable-beef.
In addition, I have chorizos in the oven, roasting on convection roast.
Also, for New Year's Day, I'm cleaning out all my kitchen cabinets to get an organized start on the New Year! I love having everything clean and organized. It's a lot of work--pulling things out of cabinets, washing, etc.,--but it will be well worth it as I am throwing many things away (or giving away), and I'll have more space.

(2,016 posts)Not in the mood yet for cooking, so tonight will just be a pizza from the joint down the road.
Since the fridge was virtually empty when I got back, this morning I gave it a good cleaning/sterilizing. Ahhh, a clean fridge without the 5 lbs of accumulated onion skins at the bottom of the drawer.
I did end up taking back with me some Gaspar's chouriço, and 2.5 lbs of Saugy's (RI's all natural hot dogs with sheep casing, a staple for dog lovers. See: www.saugy.net) This year, the TSA didn't search my luggage since I didn't need any pepperoni (dynamite sticks in the luggage?!?!).
I hit all the RI foodie stuff while there: steamers (Ipswich clams), quahogs, clam cakes and chowder, fish n' chips, lobsters (and a lobster roll which had a pound of nothing but meat), and "gaggers" - RI dogs with an allspice meat sauce, onions, mustard and celery salt. Oh, and scungilli - marinated North Atlantic conch - a big hit with the Guidos.
Christmas was spent in the kitchen with Ma, getting everything ready for the spread. The usual suspects: antipasto (chock full of Prisciotto de Parma) and the marinated (aka- "relish" plate, then the (wedding) soup, then the pasta and marinara, then the main course. This year was prime rib, with garlic mashed spuds, green beans and TONS of pastries (which I don't eat, but I hear they were good since none were left!).
All in all, a great visit! And, I didn't gain a pound. (Not sure how THAT happened. ) Oh, and I won the yearly poker game and bragging rights for 12 months...
