What's for Dinner, Sat., Oct. 15, 2016

A few Chinese dumplings for an appetizer. For the entree:

Shrimp fried rice. Veggies will be chopped carrots, onion, green beans, little bits of Brussels sprouts, and red pepper. Of course I will have my favorite sauce, hoisin, at the ready.

For dessert, a work colleague gave me a package of biscotti. There are two of each kind--vanilla, chocolate covered, hazelnut, etc. If I can find my hot chocolate, that would make a nice dessert.

Food bank gave my roomie some onions, potatoes and corn on the cob. I have some ground beef, so a shared dinner.

I'm on SSDI, roomie is on SS. Food stamps for him in Ohio are a whopping $20/mo
I think. He has buddies @ the church where the food bank is, they do coffee&gab on Sat ams. The fresh vegs&fruits do extend things some.
We share the house, I'm a pretty fair cook but I can't cut the grass or shovel snow, roomie would live on microwave dinners, so occasionally we share meals. Cooking for one does get really boring. And you are so sweet to ask...

We aren't married legally because my income would count against her in a few ways. She gets a whopping $900 dollars a month in ssdi and is eligible for $17 a month in food stamps here in FL, but she doesn't even bother.

It is a shame, you work your whole life, get sick, can't work and this country doesn't even let you eat. Each person on disability or ss should get at least $200 a month in food stamps. Shameful. If it weren't for my income as a nurse, she couldn't make it on her own.

I am glad you have a good thing going on with your roomie.

though it's barely cool enough here. An arm roast, mashed potatoes and gravy. Petite peas, maybe with some green onion sauteed in butter. For dessert I poached some Bosc pears in red wine.

Poached pears!

I just bought a bag of them, but they are far from being ripe. They seem to take forever, and you have to catch them when they are just right, otherwise they change texture.

The veggies and gravy were great, the meat was tough. I prefer eye roast but they had none so I got a chuck roast on sale. Should have cooked longer at a lower temp or used crock pot.
