The stores have lots of unscented hard California peaches. 1-was it just a bad year in climate in Ga. 2-why are Cali. peaches so unscented?

(35,454 posts)The peaches and...nectarines are great here in NY. First I saw them I gave a tiny squeeze thinking they'd be hard as rocks and much to my surprise they were ripe. Sweet, juicy, not mealy, a joy.

(21,055 posts)And they couldn't find people to pick peaches so they rotting on trees. All over the south they can't find workers to pick produce. I wonder why those good ole white chump boys can't pick those crops? Couldn't happen to a better group.

(35,454 posts)I am the recipient of a fruit of the month club and this month it was supposed to be cherries. When they didn't arrive I called and told they had a late spring and that they would come in a few weeks. When they came they were in terrible shape, I called and they said they had new inexperienced pickers. I figure they didn't have pickers when the fruit was just ripe and had to scramble and when they finally got them the cherries were overripe.

(16,066 posts)Are there any farmer's markets in your area? You might be able to find what you're looking for there!

(13,865 posts)SC actually produces more peaches (though not nearly as many as CA). Due to a late freeze this spring, the SC peach crop was estimated to be at least 3/4 destroyed; I assume the same thing applies to GA.

(16,330 posts)but I got some Georgia peaches recently that were very good. NOT cheap though.

(13,865 posts)I always made it a priority to have a summer job lined up in High School because the default was to work in the peach-packing plants. Friends who worked there, for minimum wage, said they itched all summer.

(3,280 posts)The orchards in Niagara produce amazing peaches, plums, apricots, and nectarines, all of which I love to death.
Last year, we got almost no apricots at all, because the weather was just terrible for them. It was bad news for my hubby's restaurant, because he usually gets tons of amazing local fresh fruit to preserve and sell from his restaurant, but last year we could do his amazing apricot jam, and the plum preserves were just kinda meh.
