Other contributions are also welcome, but the pies are the stars of the show.

I'll take a slice of buttermilk pie and top it off with a small slice of pumpkin. You sound like my kind of cook..

It tends on the sweet side, has to with cranberries. I am not a cook but I do do the holidays with special things I run into. Still, sweetness aside, it was really good and moist and enjoyable.

Normally I am good with pies, not pumpkin actually since I am not crazy about that but I love pies and cookies more than about anything in the world!

and just figure it's part of our holiday giving. If they want to bring a dish, it's always welcome, but not necessary. The main thing is to enjoy a wonderful meal together.

It is just me here to do it. I had 2 sons who do not cook and one daughter in law who does not eat and will not eat anything I put on the table. She brings pieces of fruit to eat. It is all mine to take care of. I do not mind it except my tradition is to do everything I can from scratch. I bake bread for the stuffing etc. If our veggie garden did not go belly up the year my husband had heart surgery and a seizure disorder that took 3 years to control more would be from my work. I LOVE to do it but it does take a lot of time. My boys will not let me alter the dinner that they have had since they were babies. Only the vegetable and dessert can be changed but it is mostly a sure bet to have Brussels Sprouts. Dessert just needs to be sweet. The favorite is my mothers Apple Crisp.

Have a great time doing that with your daughter! I had always hoped to have a DIL to help but my other son seems to be in no hurry, lol. We are doing nothing this year because my first grandchild is due on Thanksgiving day! A GIRL! Amazing to have a girl in the family.

its usually pecan because that's what all the guys like. Most of us ladies would rather have something else. This year it's going to be German Chocolate Cake.

We now have family members who are?; diabetic, allergic to tree nuts and/or bananas, sensitive to gluten, milk, butter, and I'm not sure what else.

I'm thinking of making meringue cookies with an alternative sweetner. Egg white, sweetner, vanilla, and maybe chocolate chips or crushed peppermint candies. They look cool, and people tend to eat less since they look like more than they are.

Meringue cookies sound good to me, and crushed peppermint would be nice at the end of the day.

One of the comments said they had made it with pumpkin seeds rather than almonds and I think that would fit my needs. I may make it as a test recipe and see how it turns out.

I've made the meringue cookies several times before (though usually with chocolate chips or pecans) but never for a gathering, just for us. They don't last long in storage so I will have to make them the day before - or even the night before. My original recipe called them "Forgotten Cookies" and after cooking, you left them in the oven overnight to finish as it cooled.

My original "go to" dessert I took to family gatherings was pecan pie but now too many have developed allergies and sensitivities to the ingredients.
