I used to work on Church St. here in Toronto. I was doing clothes retail in a men's clothing store. Church St. is Toronto's gay district, and there's a lot of higher-end shops and boutiques.
One day, I went to this little high-end butcher down the street from where I worked, and was going to get a nice steak for dinner for my husband and I. I walked in and saw they had ribeye for $24.99/lb. There was even a little sign that said dry-aged 25 days, but it was BRIGHT red meat, not a trace of the lovely dry-ish orange outside that real dry-aged meat has. All I could think was, I can go to La Palette (a lovely French restaurant near us) and order the steak frites. It costs $28 and they'll cook it, it comes with a side of fries, and they'll even do the dishes!
Anyway. That was the last time I ever stepped into that particular shakedown shack. Much closer to us is a very serious butcher called Sanagan's, and their meat really is dry aged (when they advertise that), and is significantly better, and significantly cheaper. Also, ribeye is my favourite for sure, but we also enjoy bavette or NY strip, too. Flank or skirt for fajitas.
