enough
(13,255 posts)But six months before people were sickened by the contaminated romaine, President Donald Trumps FDA responding to pressure from the farm industry and Trumps order to eliminate regulations shelved the water-testing rules for at least four years.
Despite this deadly outbreak, the FDA has shown no sign of reconsidering its plan to postpone the rules. The agency also is considering major changes, such as allowing some produce growers to test less frequently or find alternatives to water testing to ensure the safety of their crops.
The FDAs lack of urgency dumbfounds food safety scientists.
Mystifying, isnt it? said Trevor Suslow, a food safety expert at the University of California, Davis. If the risk factor associated with agricultural water use is that closely tied to contamination and outbreaks, there needs to be something now. I cant think of a reason to justify waiting four to six to eight years to get started.

Whattabout when people cut florets and use raw in dips? Ut-oh.
I haven't purchased any kind of lettuce since the romaine fiasco. None. My husband eats iceberg salads from restaurants where we get take out. I won't. They say the hydroponic is safe. You still need to wash it thoroughly.

(15,088 posts)Its self contained, so you dont need extra light. Its expensive, but I already had it because I use it to start plants in the spring. Three weeks after planting romaine, I have a usable quantity of lettuce with more coming along every day. Im going to have to give lettuce up in April, though, because I want to start nicotiana Sylvestrus in my Aerogarden.

This nicotiana, is it the decorative tobacco plant?
