Funny story. A good friend found a "grouper" on a recent sail across the channel.

I had not heard the term before, but it is a crate used to hold drugs that has been thrown or has fallen overboard.

This one had 22 pounds of MJ. While it was completely dry, the quality is apparently not the great.

So we were talking about how to extract the oils.

How do you do it?

fill a jar, add 100proof vodka to cover, lid on tight. put in a dark place and shake every few days. The longer the better (a friend has a jar that's over a year old, it's almost black) use for pain, a few drops in liquid or massage into skin.

dried stuff in a crockpot, cover well with canola oil so it's completely soaked and immersed, then add an inch or more of water on top of that.

Heat it up on either "warm" or "low" and stir periodically through the day. Don't let it simmer much or let the water evaporate, this is long, low, slow heating to dissolve the resins in the oil.

I'll strain it through cheesecloth, rinse the strainings with nearly boiling water to get all the oil out, let the liquid cool a bit, then into a container to chill in the freezer. When the water freezes they say you can scrape off the oil, which will still be semi-soft.

And yeah, I should make some tincture, too. I use cannabis for chronic back/neck pain and the resulting insomnia from an ancient skiing injury. 1 week of it and I am a true believer. They'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands (the brownies, especially).

A few questions...

1 - Once you have the oil, how do you store it? What kind of container is best? Fridge?

2 - How is the oil used in the cooking? Are you substituting it for another ingerdient or adding it extra?

3 - How much is used for say... A batch of boxed brownies?

Thanks!

just like regular canola oil. My brownie mix (boxed) called for 1/4 c of oil so I used the cannabis oil - easy-peasy. You want to keep the oven temp below 325F so the cannabinoids don't degrade too much, so I baked in a 8"x8" pan at 325F per package instructions for thicker brownies.

I have pumpkin puree in the freezer to use up so my next effort will be pumpkin pecan bread, a quick bread that uses oil. After I bake it I will test for strength by eating only half a slice to see how it goes.

The author could find only one dispensary in the Seattle area that tracked amounts of active ingredients, and they made all their medibles with "the good stuff." It solved his pain/insomnia problem much more effectively to know what he should be looking for and what he was getting.

The variety that gives the best buzz may not touch your pain or give you a good night's sleep. Good luck with your research. You're lucky to have access to a prescription. Though it's legal here, my doc is afraid to touch it, forcing me to turn to crime.

recommendations. I assume that is to protect their regular practices from legal liability if the feds get nasty. Nobody gets a MMJ rec from their actual primary care physician. Sad, the hoops we have to jump through, isn't it?

Indicas work great for me. I feel like a new person the past 10 days. Back problem? WHAT back problem?

I am considering turning to crime

RI actually passed a medical marijuana law, and the Obama administration in the person of the AJ landed on them like a ton of bricks. I see the Connecticut House voted for a law in the last few days, so it will be interesting to see what comes of that.

I'm probably the last person in the world to know the answer to this question, but is marijuana addictive? I use a lot less prescription pain med than I would if I weren't worried about addiction.

I t really is a lot less addictive than tobacco or alcohol, and far less damaging. I've gone back to it recently for pain relief, because my Dr. has forbidden the use of Ibuprofen, but I haven't smoked in over a week. It's just not something I think about as long as the pain is manageable.

Of course, being pain-free and getting really sound sleep can be addictive.

If you have other addictions of course, YMMV. I have none. When I finished college I went without MJ for nearly 2 decades and never missed it. Having a beer gives me a similar state of mind (but without the great pain relief), but has calories and does a tiny bit of brain damage. MJ is harmless. the amounts of smoke are trivial (MJ is so strong these days it only takes 2-3 hits), and you can do edibles or use a vaporizer to get around that.

I only felt safe to use it recently - LAPD places zero priority on individual private use (especially if the used has a recommendation). And supposedly so does DOJ. Heck, a guy at the bus stop yesterday about 6 PM was toking up. Fine with me, lol. Cigarette smoke bothers me a whole lot more.
