Related: About this forumIs tethering illegal
in your city/town?
It is in mine and I just called 311 on a neighbor who has her lab tethered to a tree in the front yard... It's RAINING.
Hate. Hate people who do this.

(11,065 posts)And a good thing, too. I hate it when people do that, too. I realize most people that do it have no idea how dangerous it is, and if I ever see it anywhere I call the cops.
Good on you for calling.

(67,757 posts)The laws generally prescribe the length of time an animal may be tethered, generally 10 to 12 hours. One of the counties also specifies that the tether must have a swivel in it. No nearby jurisdictions prohibit them.

(15,220 posts)The way the law is written, it's so convaluded that people can get away with chaining dogs. There are limitations on the hours, length of the chain, type, etc., but a lot of idiots use this to justify doing it, and neither the animal control people nor the police really give a damn, any way.
It should be illegal for any extended time - period. I hate it. it breaks my heart when I see it.

(18,219 posts)Pennsylvania has bills in the House and Senate, but they go no place. At this time, there are no laws on the books, other than that the dog must have access to clean water and food. At least, that is what I believe to be true to date. Shameful. I have never understood why people even bother to adopt a dog if they do not want an animal living in the house with them.

(40 posts)Where I live, you either keep your dog inside, tied to something, or you find them dead on the side of the road.
Sera_Bellum
(140 posts)an option as well? Why would you find them "dead on the side of the road"?

(224 posts)I rent and the yard is only partially fenced. My dog gets tethered outside if she wants to go out and I can't be right there. She's never out for more than a few hours, and she has water/shade/toys. I live in the desert, so rain is rarely an issue.
