(6,151 posts)There haven't been any solicitors for any cause at my front door since shortly after I moved here almost 8 years ago!
First it was because of the chows, and even now with a couple of much smaller and friendlier dogs, I still tie my front gate shut so they can't nose up the butterfly latch. It's too much trouble for anyone except the meter reader to come in the yard, and he just jumps the back gate. Of course most people aren't afraid of Molly Maguire and Brigid, but I've got most of the town already trained not to barge in. I enjoy lovely, brief chats with passersby when I'm already outdoors, and I wave at everybody and offer free flowers and garden produce to those I like - but I like keeping that fence between us too.
Matter of fact, I used to plan on replacing the gate's butterfly latch with something impossible for the dogs to open - but now I'm reconsidering because I want to keep my handy excuse for tying it shut. I seem to be growing eccentric in my old age. Oh well, so long as the dogs are happy....

(11,065 posts)Just the barking is enough to deter that since they know that the family and neighbors will be on alert. Better to find a house with no dog.
Don't go underestimating the power of the Shih-Tzu.
Btw, that's the breed of my next door neighbors little fluff ball (not the crazy people I usually mention around here but the fabulous neighbors on the other side of me). He's an indoor kind of dude though which is so disappointing for Yoshi, but Sonny always stops at the fence after doing his business for a little kissie-poo before going back in the house. He really quickly learned to let himself back in the house in the warm weather when they just have their storm door closed by poking a paw in the crack, flinging the door open and popping back inside, and he does it so fast it's like "now you see him, now you don't". Sonny was the first little doggie he'd ever seen and at first he seemed to be not quite sure what it was. LOL! Once he did the butt sniffing bit he was like, "Wow! you're really a dog after all!"
