Related: About this forumfat cat was so well behaved at the vet today
she's about 13 now and has been losing weight, so we bundled up and headed to the vet this morning.
she's down close to three pounds since sept 2011 (she weighed in just over eight pounds) and the doc said her kidneys are a bit small, so they took blood and urine samples. she also has spurs forming in her hips and knees, which i had suspected.
her heart sounds good, the rate is good, he couldn't find anything on her thyroid, her teeth are in great shape and everything else looked the way it's supposed to.
now it's just waiting for the test results.

(18,219 posts)I know that this is the hard part----waiting. I was lucky to have a vet with some ability to do a few tests in the office, and the urine under the microscope showed crystals. So there was no waiting to know that we had to start treating her immediately for kidney disease. I don't want you to have to go through this, so let's assume all is well.
And 8 pounds is not what I would call "fat cat". Even 11 pounds isn't. You have not met fat cat.

(24,146 posts)she used to be on the fat cat diet, wherein someone chased her around the house repeating 'fat cat!' awful? yes. hilarious? also yes. she's has some horrible humans.
i talked with the husband last night about the possibility of a more serious diagnosis and we're in agreement that we will do everything for her as long as there is quality of life. anything will be harder on him than on me as they are so gross together and secretly plan to elope.
but i'm hoping for the best.
Too funny about the hubby and his cat.
I'm hoping for the best for all of you, too.

(18,219 posts)For one, I will be thinking about her. If it is kidney disease, I have been through it and you will not have to worry about quality of life issues. It is not a painful disease.

(24,146 posts)her calcium levels came back elevated and they want to double check before moving forward with diagnostics. i'll take her in on thursday and post an update once we have a clearer picture of what's going on.
