uh oh

these pups are the same dad as doc, and the sweetest girl ever. my boxer is getting up there, and is frail and fragile. she is still a very happy girl, but she will not be around for all that much longer. in the meantime she is hardy enough to be a fantastic influence of doc. passing on the good dog culture is THE benefit of having a pack of dogs. she has been the greatest auntie.
and i would like to get this puppy stuff out of the way for a while. i love puppies, but damn, the time suck.

I LOVE boxers. I have never had one but I had an old girl show up at my farm about 7 or 8 years ago. She was skinny and covered with ticks. After a week of searching through records and talking to vets across the country who had taken over her records from vets who had died I finally found her family. Washington state is where she was from and they had moved to a community about 30 miles south of me in Kansas. They were gone for 3 months, their daughter did not take care of her and she ended up with me. She was the sweetest dog, just the best. I did not live here at the farm at that time so I cared for her and spent more time here. It was sad when they got home and came and picked her up. She was almost 10. They were not demonstrative at all but she obediently got in the truck when they commanded her to and they were off. Never heard a word from them. She is long dead now but I will never forget what an incredibly sweet girl she was.

These are very cute little ones. Nothing is cuter than a boxer pup.

short legged boxers, mostly. they are supposed to be a re-creation of the original pet derived from the bull baiting dogs. basically, they are all bully mutts. this is the dog that boxers came from.
i have my third boxer, and would prefer a boxer. but popularity is ruining the breed right now. i just bumped into this breeder through a friend, and she is doing everything, just everything right.
this is the half brother of these pups-

my pup. an amazingly wonderful fellow.
i need one more.

You have to look hard to find those breeders who are actually enthusiasts who really care about the dogs and their health and how they will be treated when they leave them. I am glad you found one. We found one that breeds Scotch Collies and almost got one of her pups. They are the original Collie, like Lad and Lady, if you ever read Albert Payson Terhune.

We ended up finding the most wonderful person who breeds amazing Standard Poodles. We never thought we would own a Poodle but having the chance to get to know a Standard we were sold on the breed. She is the 3rd dog for us but since the two other dogs are pretty old and our Spoo is only a year old we are already on the waiting list for the litter in February or this fall, whenever there is a big male available. We just love them.

poodles were great dogs before they got popular. the standards never got quite as f'ed up as the minis.
we just lucked into this lady. you gotta grab that stuff when you can.

the clock is ticking on my boxer. i would rather have another boxer, but the breed is such a mess right now. this way i can get this puppy stuff over for a few years.
my terriers are sisters. they have the craziest bond. if these 2 are pups together, even tho they are not sibs, i think they will be tight for life.

fwiw, my dogs are always neutered asap, and most of my dogs have been shelter dogs/strays. my boxer is a city pound rescue.
right now, tho, i am lucky enough to find someone breeding dogs who is doing a really great job. can't see how any of her pups would end up in a shelter, but then i don't know how any dogs end up that way.

But you're right about the time it takes. Wow. Our one and likely ever only litter is now 4 months. It was amazing how much I became so attached to each of them, even after promising myself not to. The up side is that all are now homed with family and friends we are in contact with, and one with us (Leo the Lion Hearted), so we are getting to watch them grow.

I always wondered how they can breathe when they're all piled up together especially since puppies soon after they're born (and really until they have their eyes open) seem to want to burrow their faces into the mommy or the other puppies. They're so adorable when they're really tiny like this... all big belly and tiny little parts. And this mommy is being so attentive. Good doggie caring so well for your babies!

Don't you just want to squirm in the pile with them? So damn adorable!

and a fabulous mom. suspect peaches would not take it too awful well if i dove in there with those pups. but she sure must trust her owner, because she always has plenty of pics.

Reading comprehension lagging a bit today for reasons best left unexplained.

It'd be a hard choice, but I don't blame you a bit on little red. S/he(?) is adorable! And if I've got it right this time, your older, female dog will be a mentor of sorts? That is always a very good thing, since nurture is just as, or sometimes even more important than nature (imho).

Good luck with the puppy-part though. Even the sweetist, best tempered of every breed can challenge the patience of any human who tries his/her best to raise a great adult dog... But then, they do something so damned sweet, that... (Grrr!!! I keep trying to talk myself out of a new dog, especially a puppy and always come back to this)

Perhaps that is why they are so cute?... Maybe it's some sort of Darwinian survival thing?

btw- no need to comment- most of this is just thinking-out-loud stuff. Again, good luck and please post more pics if you take him/her on!

the boxer has been so awesome with the pup we have now. and my terriers, although insane in many way, are very good and obedient and also a good influence.
i am getting up there- 58. i don't think i have that many more big dogs in me. there always comes a time, like you say, when even the best pup reaches a certain age, and just needs a couple asswhoopins. not sure how much longer i will be able to convince 90 lb dogs that i am the biggest, baddest dog around. i got that now, but who knows how much longer.
