Peru: Woman opens cat hospice and looks after 150 poorly animals with leukaemia

There’s a woman in Peru who has started her own cat hospice and is currently looking after 175 ill cats with feline leukaemia.

Maria Torero lives in the Peruvian capital of Lima with her three children, and has turned her eight-room house into a sanctuary for the desperately ill cats, scattering it with food bowls and two dozen litter trays to make them comfortable.

Maria, who works full-time as a nurse during the day, has been looking after the animals for the past five years and spends around £1,200 a month paying for their food and medicine. She finds strays around the markets and local streets and gets them tested for the cat-only disease before bringing them home with her.

I am in total awe of people like this and totally ashamed when I complain about having to clean up throwup of one of my 5 pets.
