Related: About this forumI have a new but hidden cat
No, not the cat named Lily that I thought I was going to adopt. Some friends of my husband had to reduce the number of their cat at least until they can move out of the decrepit mobile home to another location. So he agreed to adopt "Blackie" a adult neutered black male cat with one eye. The description I got was that he spent most of his time outside, didn't answer to his name and would eat anything.
My husband brought him home Monday afternoon. He had set up the bathroom upstairs for the cat with food, water and a litter box. My plan was that we would leave him in there for a few days, let my cat interact through the door and take it from there. My cat went upstairs but seemed unaware there was another cat in the house.
Yesterday we had an appointment in town. Without telling me my husband left the door to the bathroom where Blackie was living open. When we got home, Blackie was no where to be found. We still have not seen or heard from Blackie. We've looked all over the house and haven't seen the cat. Although we have a cat door to the outside, Blackie doesn't know where it is or how to use it.
Upstairs, Blackie only had access to the bathroom, the hallway and my husband's office. The way down the stairs is completely open, but Blackie was very frightened, in a new house with new people and the smell of an unknown cat all around. My cat has not reacted at all, so he's not giving us any clues to where Blackie can be.
I don't think Blackie has made it down the stairs. I think he found some place upstairs to hide that my husband hasn't found.
My only theory at this point is that Blackie crawled up inside the recliner in my husband's office as a place to hide. But we can't get to the back right now and even if we could we wouldn't be able to see all the crevices a cat could hide - we know this from past experiences.
We're still putting fresh food and water out and my husband can check the litter box to see if it's been used - but my cat can now get in to use/mark it so that may not help.
At this point, I am not sure what to do to find Blackie and try to make him more comfortable here.

(21,846 posts)He might stick his head out if he hears the can opener. The only downside is that you might end up with several cans of opened food but still no cat.

(34,136 posts)I'm thinking of telling my husband to take up the crunchies that are out now and leaving no food until later today. Then after dinner, he can take a can of cat food up and see if that lures Blackie out.
Apparently, the previous owners fed crunchies and table scraps, no canned food.

(34,136 posts)So we haven't kept any around since we put my husband's cat to sleep.
I'll have him ask the previous owners of Blackie tomorrow when he sees them and if Blackie likes it, he can stop by Walmart on the way home from bridge (at way late) and pick some up.

(18,219 posts)I had a cat who I had for years. When I moved, she hid and I didn't find her for three days. She had crawled up in a drop ceiling and on the third day I finally called her and she meowed. Before that, nothing. Your cat will not allow himself to starve to death.

(34,136 posts)I also feel bad since this is supposed to be a temporary adoption. The owners are hoping they can find a place to live where all their cats will be welcome. Also, where they are living now is far away from a bus stop and they can no longer walk the distance especially with a Florida summer coming - this past winter with the rain and cold was bad enough. So they are looking for somewhere in town close to transportation and shopping for really cheap.
But I know how a new cat in the house can hide. Before I married my husband he adopted a gray long haired cat off the side of some road. He put the cat in a spare bedroom - didn't see it again for a month. He put food and water in, it disappeared. He provided a litter box which was used regularly. But the cat never showed itself. Finally one day it ventured out and started eating in the kitchen with the other cat of the house, but would retreat back to his bedroom most of the rest of the time.
The cat was never friendly, never let anyone pet it. Eventually he would ask to be let out and back in the house door and seemed to have settled in. Unfortunately he liked exploring cars. He climbed into a friend's car and may have fallen asleep in the back seat. They drove to Panama City to the beach and when they opened the car door, the cat took off - that was the first they knew he was in the car. We never found him again. I hope he found a good home, but he was self sufficient before my husband took him home so I guess he was able to take care of himself.

(34,136 posts)If nothing else, I'll get my husband to bring his owners out here and see if he'll respond to their voices. I'm not sure that will work, though.

(11,573 posts)One of my cats hid in the back of the sofa for a day; a friend's cat did likewise for three. Do you have a spare bedroom? Cats can tear through the fabric on the bottom of the springs and hide there.

(34,136 posts)I got up in the middle of the night and he was at my cat's food tray. As soon as he saw me, he took off so I only got a quick glance. But he's got to be fine, as fast as he moved.
I asked my husband to check the recliner, but there are piles of stuff on both sides so he can't get to the back. And since he uses it to pile stuff on top of, no one will be sitting in it so the cat won't get caught in the mechanism. So if Blackie has chosen that as a place to hide, that's fine.
There is a spare bedroom but we're keeping that door closed so Blackie can't get in there. But obviously he is beginning to explore the rest of the house and hopefully will adjust and let us make friends with him.

I'm sure he'll be okay.

(34,136 posts)I saw him the other night at my cat's food dish but apparently he's living upstairs in my husband's office. We think he's hiding in the recliner most of the time. When I saw him that once, he took off so quick I wasn't sure what I saw. It wasn't until my husband confirmed that Blackie has no tail I was sure that I had seen him and not some phantom.
My husband takes food upstairs to him and checks his litter box. The food is disappearing and the litter box is being used even when my cat isn't up there.
Blackie's regular owners say he's never been friendly. I think he was a feral that moved in with the rest of their group of cats.
He'll come around.

(34,136 posts)And an unsocialized cat would not get a new home.
Even if we never see him, we will make sure he gets food and a warm place to stay.
We do need to get some cat nip - the owner said he does like it.m Maybe that would lure him out!

(34,136 posts)I think those come infused with catnip. So maybe if we get more catnip for him, he'll be more comfortable.
My cat is indifferent to catnip so we just don't keep it around. Tomorrow I have a meeting in town and my husband is going to run errands while I'm there. He can swing by and get some nip!

(20,868 posts)These are infused with catnip. I have two of them and my three cats play on them all day long.
Glad you have seen Blackie around! I hope he comes out and joins the rest of the family soon!

(34,136 posts)About mid evening, my cat started caterwauling so my husband and I went to see what was going on. I came from the library, my husband came from the stairs. Neither of us saw Blackie but my cat was very agitated and obviously looking for something.
Blackie had eaten all his dinner upstairs and we think he came downstairs to clean up anything Tashi had left. We looked all over but Blackie is excellent at hiding and we couldn't find him anywhere.
At least Blackie is getting comfortable enough to move around. He would have had to walk right past my husband to come downstairs, but my husband was playing games on the computer and didn't notice. The other good news is that no fight began. I don't mind a little screaming but I wouldn't want fur and blood flying!

(34,136 posts)My husband was gone all evening and I was in the library doing needlepoint, so the house was very quiet for hours. My cat spent the evening sleeping in the desk chair in the room with me.
When my husband got home I went out to say hello and to get some strawberry pie. Blackie was at my cat's dish cleaning up the canned bits my cat won't eat. As soon as he saw me, Blackie dashed off into the shadows - I think he hid in one of the recliners in the great room.
Tashi had followed me out, but apparently he didn't see Blackie, though he did look a little puzzled that all his canned food was gone. So I put down more. My husband says Blackie is cleaning up the canned food but not eating much of the crunchies. Since my cat is thin, I don't mind giving him extra and they certainly are not going to waste!
I'm glad Blackie is starting to venture out more. I hope that he gets a little friendlier eventually, but his owners say he's never been friendly at all. It's just weird having this phantom cat.

(34,136 posts)I'd heard noises that sounded like cat claws on glass. I thought my cat was outside hassling the blue birds that are in mating frenzy and hanging out at my windows and doors. But when I went looking for him, I surprised Blackie on the stairs.
Poor thing was terrified. He couldn't go up because my husband was in the room at the top of the stairs and he was afraid to come down because I was there. I talked softly to him and crouched down. I guess he decided I was less scary than my husband because he trotted down, then dashed past me.
I finally got a good look at him. He's a smallish black cat, with one eye and a stub of a tail. I couldn't tell what color his eye is. His coat is thick and shiny so he seems to be in good health. And his weight is good, but we knew his move to our house had not cut his appetite.
At least he's coming out in the open at times other than the middle of the night. And he didn't completely freak when I talked to him. I think we're starting to make progress!
