Advice for cat to wear a cone?

Ziggy came in with a serious scratch in his eye. The vet sent him home with a cone that he was able to get off in the carrier at the vets. He has been able to remove the cone every time I put it on - he is big fella and I think his neck is the same size or bigger than his head! Just putting the collar that would attach to the cone caused him to act like a bucking bronco - smashing into things with his head.
I even made him a soft cone out of quilted fabric but that did not work either.

Has anyone tried alternatives to the cone?

There's this thing, which has worked for some cats of my acquaintance: The Velveteen Ocelot Feb 2017 #1

up with me. He slept peacefully without it, and I could distract him with some petting if he tried the scratch his stitches. It worked for both of us. I also bought a soft cone made by Kong that comes with it's own fastener, and that seemed more tolerable than the bigger, stiff plastic cone from the vet.

There's also an inflatable collar out, but it looked too bulky IMHO. Hope you find a workable solution and your kitty gets better soon.

Glad to hear that because he is not really touching his eye without the collar - at least when I am with him. The Kong looks like it may work for when I am not with him.
